Runway to Everyday

Inspired By

The looks that we see on the runway are often too outrageous or too pricey to be worn by the average person, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t serve as great inspiration. We’ve both observed certain outfits on the catwalk that dropped our jaws and got us thinking about how we could recreate them to fit our everyday lives (and budgets). We don’t necessarily want to create a piece by piece replica of the outfit but instead draw on the designer’s idea and infuse it with our own personal style.

Runway to Everyday - Audrey

This runway look is from the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2014 show. The entire collection drew on Sicily’s history with ancient Greece, one of the designers calling it “a dream of Sicily”. The flowers and flowing fabric make for an ethereal look while the chunky Grecian belt provides a contrast to the softness of the ensemble. I found this great dress on ASOS that doesn’t mirror the Dolce & Gabbana frock exactly, but has a similar elegance to it. The pastel floral print and braided straps are reminiscent of the Grecian feel in the Dolce & Gabbana collection. I would throw on a large, metallic belt like this one from Love Melrose to roughen up the look a bit.

Ella

Runway to EverydayThe designs of Hermès’ Christophe Lemaire stood out to me the most from the Fall/Winter 2014 Paris Fashion Week runway looks. The entire collection is inspired by menswear with beautifully tailored and flowing silhouettes in an autumnal color palette. This runway look achieves a perfect juxtaposition of structure and draping and could easily be converted to an everyday look. Fitted trousers and white button ups are everywhere in stores nowadays. I’ve opted for a gorgeous pair of black trousers from Zara paired with black ankle boots, a loosely fitted white top from Urban Outfitters, and a marble grey duster coat from Topshop. I know the menswear trend is not for everyone but I love how masculine attire can be beautifully translated into feminine style.

Inspired By: Christmas!

Inspired By

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With Christmas a week away, we thought we’d share some things that we’re loving this holiday season

Song:

Audrey:

I listen to Christmas music pretty much nonstop from the Friday before Thanksgiving until Christmas (overkill? Oh well). It reminds me of the holidays growing up, and it just instantly puts me in a better mood. I prefer the classics (Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, etc.) and it’s very hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to it would probably have to be Home For The Holidays by Perry Como. I always loved this song, but since this is my first Christmas since I’ve been away at college, the words mean so much more to me. It’s great to be home :)

Ella:

How can I pick just ONE favorite Christmas song?!? Like Audrey, I love me some classics. After much deliberation I chose Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Doris Day & Bing Crosby. There are various versions but this one is my favorite. It’s just sooo fun to sing along with and it’s the only Christmas song I can listen to all year round!

Scent:

Audrey:

As I mentioned in my November Favorites, I recently picked up some holiday candles from B&BW. I fell in love with the White Barn Nutmeg & Spice scent! It’s a wonderful holiday scent without being overwhelming. It’s a very nutty and warm scent (although my sister says it smells more like eggnog. Give it a whiff and you be the judge), and I could definitely see myself burning it every winter.

Ella:

During the Holiday season my family is constantly baking.Whether it’s a cake, cookies, or just some chocolate covered pretzels, my mom and I are constantly in the kitchen whipping up some treats. My house starts to smell like a bakery and it’s quite lovely.

Movie:

Audrey:

Christmas movies are the BEST! There’s something about these movies that allows you to watch every year and never get tired of them. Perhaps it’s the element of miracles that’s present in all of them, or just the joy of all the decorations and festivities, but I just can’t get enough of them. Again, it’s super difficult to pick just one favorite but I think it’d have to be the original Miracle on 34th Street. It’s such a classic and I love the goosebump-inducing ending. Ahh the magic of Christmas

Ella:

I look forward to watching Christmas movies all year round. There is nothing like snuggling up with a blanket and having a Christmas movie marathon. I think one of the main reasons people like Christmas movies so much is because it reminds them of their childhood and how glorious Christmas is for a child. Though the list of great Christmas movies is quite long, I opted for my childhood favorite: The Santa Clause. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this movie but I can never get enough. Every time I watch this movie I feel 10 years old again and it’s amazing!

Food/Beverage:

Audrey:

EGGNOG! Nothing else says Christmas quite like a nice glass of eggnog with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. I know that it’s not for everyone, and I myself definitely could not stomach it year-round, but it’s a nice treat once a year.

Eggnog

Ella:

This may sound cliché but I have to say hot cocoa because it’s the only time of the year that I drink it. It’s only during Christmas that a nice cup of hot cocoa with some whipped cream and marshmallows sounds divine.

Place:

Audrey:

My living room. Haha that sounds so bizarre, but I adore my living room all decked out for the holidays. I’ve lived in the same house all my life, so Christmas mornings have always been in the same place. I have amazing childhood memories of opening my gifts under the tree. And when the tree is the only light in the room. Oh man I could go on forever

I hastily took a cellphone pic of my tree because I didn't feel like digging for pictures from past years :)

I hastily took a cellphone pic of my tree because I didn’t feel like digging for pictures from past years. Totally doesn’t do it justice

Ella:

I though about this one for a while…though it sounds cheesy, it’s not where you are during Christmas but it’s who you’re with. Christmas is a time for family and as long as my family is gathered together is doesn’t matter where we are (as long as there is food and some decorations haha)

Trend:

Audrey:

Ugly Christmas sweaters! I’ve been dying to get my hands on one of these. I think they’re so fun. Of course they’re ridiculous and you can only pull ’em off once a year, but that’s the fun. I would love to go to an ugly Christmas sweater party.

Ella:

Regular Christmas Sweaters! Haha. I’ve always wanted a sweater with reindeer and snowflakes on it. There just so cool and festive. And Audrey, I would love to accompany you to an Ugly Christmas sweater party :)

Audrey:

Pretty much any photo that captures the thrill of Christmas as a child melts my heart. This particular one shows two young girls asleep by the tree, clearly trying to wait up for Santa. So precious!

Ella:

Being in NY during Christmas is on my bucket list. I’m dying to see the Rockefeller Christmas tree and ice-skate next to it. Mere pictures of  the Rockefeller center are incredible so I can’t imagine how incredible it will be to see it in person.

Decoration:

Audrey:

I love any and all Christmas decorations. The lights, the wreaths, the lawn displays, but I think the one decoration that really screams Christmas to me is the tree. Every year my family puts on the movie White Christmas and decorates the tree together. It’s such fun decorating it, and it brings an awesome energy into the house.  I personally like trees with lots of different colored ornaments, many of which hold sentimental value, white lights, and thin tinsel. There are all types of beautiful trees  (white, silver, and blue ones) but I prefer the classic look. Collecting ornaments and decorating the tree together is a tradition I see passing on to my own kids and I cant wait.

Ella:

My family puts up Christmas decorations pretty early so we can get in the Christmas spirit as soon as possible. During the first week of December, we set aside a day of decorations. It’s a team effort to get down the tree from the attic along with all the lights and ornaments. We jam out to Christmas music and have a blast decorating our house. My siblings and I also make sure to put lights and some Christmas touches in our room. It’s one of my favorite things to do…ever. But if I had to pick my favorite decoration it would be Christmas lights. They just turn everything and anything into magic.

Inspired By: FALL

Inspired By

The joy of Fall/Autumn is upon us. Time to bring out the cozy sweaters and scarves. Enjoy the indoor rainy day activities with a warm cup of tea. Here’s what inspires us during this harvest time…

MOVIE:

Ella: Midnight In Paris

I can’t tell you how much I love this movie. The reason why I picked it is because I can so imagine cozying up on the couch with a blanket and enjoying the beautiful Parisian scenery. This movie just puts me in such a good mood!

Audrey: When Harry Met Sally

This movie just screams Fall to me. Partly because of the setting of the movie, and partly because my sister and I make it a point to watch this movie at least once every Fall/Winter. I love the Christmas in New York feel, and it is just an amazing movie overall! Such a classic

SONG:

Ella: Jazz

I just couldn’t come up with one song, so I kinda went with a genre. I’ve notice that the music I listen to during the fall is very mellow and sometimes a little melancholy. I particularity like listening to Billie Holiday because there is so much soul and passion in each of her songs.

Audrey: Hugh Laurie

Like Ella, jazz definitely says Fall to me. But since I listen to it year-round, I decided to hone in on one artist that gives me that Fall feel. I remember I was just floored when I discovered that Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) sings! And even more floored when I heard his music. He has a bluesy style and his voice is just out of this world. His music = my rainy day soundtrack (along with Norah Jones and Billy Joel).

BEVERAGE/FOOD:

Ella : PUMPKIN PIE!

I didn’t even have to think twice about this. I love love love pumpkin pie. Such a comfort food during the fall.

Audrey: Candy Corn

I was always sorta meh about candy corn, but I recently re-discovered my love for it. It’s a nice treat to have once a year (all that sugar can only be tolerated seasonally!). It reminds me of Halloween and Halloween movies. LOVE. (My backup was Eggnog, but that’s really just a Christmas thing. Stay tuned because we may do an Inspired By Christmas post!)

PLACE:

Ella: Coffee Shops

I’ve recently been spending a lot of time in coffee shops. There’s nothing like warming up with a nice cup of coffee or tea and enjoying the comforting atmosphere.

Audrey: Panera Bread

Though I frequent this place all year long, it is a very autumnal place. I remember going there on rainy days and getting a nice hot latte or some soup and working on college apps (ugh) or just hanging out. Even the color scheme reminds me of fall time.

TREND:

Ella: Layering

The best part of putting an outfit together during fall is all the glorious  layering. Chucking on a cardigan and scarf to go along with that cute top. Matching your favorite skirt with a pair of fun tights. It’s just so amusing experimenting with different pieces!

Audrey: Infinity scarves

First of all, how in the heck do you pick ONE Fall fashion item ?? They’re all so amazing!! But I settled on infinity scarves [specifically, knit infinity scarves] because I just started wearing them this season and they’re amazing. They really do pull any outfit together and keep you extra toasty.

One of my favorite things about Fall is the gloomy rainy weather (unfortunately  we’ve literally had only ONE rainy day so far). Sounds like an oxymoron but gloomy weather puts me in a great mood. I’m sure if I lived somewhere where it rained constantly I would have different feelings, but I live in LA and rainy days are rare.

This pic really hits home for me. Sure, there are thousands of photos of cozy, tea-drinking, sweater-clad people walking through the rain and the leaves, but this picture is reminiscent of the Fall days I experienced as a child. Watching Disney cartoons with my sister as the rain poured outside. Not having school or worries (we had the track system so we were home from school in the fall). My mom bringing us lunch. Those were the days, and this picture has all that rushing back.

QUOTE:

Ella: Today is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll ever be again.

This quote doesn’t relate to fall particularity but it’s a quote I’ve recently been obsessed with. I kind of had an AHA moment when I first read this. There’s just so much depth and makes you truly appreciate each day.

Audrey: “Autumn…the year’s last, loveliest smile” – William Cullen Bryant

Is that not the perfect description of Autumn?? I fell in love when I heard this quote. It’s so simple yet so brilliantly describes this time of year.

ART:

Ella: Giving Thanks

The artist that first popped into my head was Rockwell because of his very famous Thanksgiving dinner painting (called Freedom From Want). I’m a huge fan of Rockwell’s art and illustrations! The piece that I picked  is called Giving Thanks because it not only goes with the fall festivities but it reminds me to be thankful for all my blessings.

Ugh this is perfection. The gloominess of a rainy day, all the people mulling about in their busy lives, and then there’s the central figure. She’s a pop of color in the midst of all the glum, and best of all, she’s stopped to enjoy the rain. She’s enjoying the circumstances, reveling in them. I just love it. I feel like her on rainy days :)

Autumn is such an inspiring time of year. What inspires you about this season?

Inspired By: Summer

Inspired By

Oh the joy of summer. It is the epitome of freedom. The long, lazy days. The hot afternoons and late nights. This time of year can be so inspiring. Here are some things that just scream summer to us:

Movie:

Ella – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was the first Audrey Hepburn movie I saw and it was during a summer movie night. After that I watched almost every single one of her movies and fell in love with Ms. Hepburn.

Audrey – Valley Girl

Valley princess meets city punk. The awesome mix of teenage love, valley girl accents, spotting local scenery, and of course a young Nicolas Cage makes this the perfect cheesy, summery, 80s movie.

Song:

Ella – Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap

Audrey – Last Friday Night

Reckless teenagers and a good beat. It isn’t the most profound of songs, but it’s a great summer jam.

Place:

Audrey & Ella – Our friend Eman’s house

(HA I wish this is what it looked like)

Last summer we spent A LOT of time at his house. So much so that we got a little sick of it, but that room will always remind us of lazy summer days, complaining about having nothing to do :)

Trend:

Ella – Summer Dresses

There’s nothing like a simple, stylish, and breezy summer dress. I feel it’s something that will never go out of style.

Audrey – Maxi skirts

Maxi skirts are so breezy and comfortable, yet they can be dressed up for a night out or dressed down for a simple coffee run. They may be a little out of place in any other season, but the laid-back style of these skirts goes hand in hand with that of summer.

Photo:

Ella:

Audrey:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. If this picture had to be summed up in just one word it would definitely be SUMMER. the carefreeness of the girl, the open-top car, the beautiful day outside, and presumably they’re blasting their favorite tunes. This is summer to me

Our Summer Picture:

Hope Summer 2012 is treating you fabulously!
