OOTD Monday: Mike Kelley Exhibition at MOCA

OOTD Mondays

This past Saturday, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles held a closing party for the Mike Kelley exhibition at the Geffen Contemporary. The exhibitions started in Amsterdam and traveled to Paris, New York, and finally Los Angeles. Though we’re not huge fans of Kelley’s work, we thought it would be fun to join this party and be a part of the lively and interesting art scene.

Photography was not allowed for most of the exhibitions but I snapped some of his work (that we were allowed to shoot) to share a glimpse of the show with you.

The event included a DJ, drinks, and food trucks

’90s Fashion Rewind «

Current Obsession/Holy Grail

As 90s kids, witnessing all these trends make a comeback is totally nostalgic for us.

90s Post

1. Bright, Funky Patterns

This trend carried over from the 80s and could be found on many a 90s sitcom (think Fresh Prince and Kelly Kapowski in SBTB). I love the boldness of these abstract prints. I wouldn’t necessarily wear some of the crazy parkas or hammer pants that folks used to wear, but I love the look of incorporating one flashy piece into an otherwise neutral outfit.

2. Jacket Around the Waist

This is a trend that I used to wear all the time, and it’s been great seeing it around lately. This trick cinches your waist in a cute way and adds a little something extra to your look.

3. Grunge

I love 90s grunge because it’s a completely unkempt look that still manages to look great. I love watching shows like Melrose Place and seeing how they layered tons of denim, plaid and even sweats to achieve a totally chilled out look. It’s borderline tacky (okay so it crosses the border into totally tacky), but I think taking elements of that style and cleaning it up today produces a really edgy look.

4. Backwards Baseball Cap

I adore the look of a backwards cap on women. Incorporating this tomboy classic is a nice nod to childhood, plus I’m a big fan of mixing girly and tough.

5. Chunky White Sandals

I wore these all the time as a kid and seeing them around again makes me incredibly happy. These shoes remind me of summer and the elementary school playground. I would definitely incorporate these into my wardrobe today with a cute floral print dress or a pair of cut-offs.

Ella90s Fashion Rewind

 1. High Waisted Bottoms

The 90s were all about high waisted jeans, skirts, and shorts paired with crop and halter tops. As a kid, I remember wearing colorful high waisted shorts with a white tie front shirt. I’m a huge fan of the high waisted trend so I’m glad it’s made a comeback. A majority of the bottoms in my closet are in the high waisted cut.

2. Floral Dresses

It’s a bit odd for me that the 90s floral dresses are now considered vintage. This wasn’t a trend I wore as a kid but I remember seeing all the older cool girls rock these maxi dresses. I’m glad this trend has returned because floral dresses are one of my favorite things to wear.

3. Flannel

The 90s were drowning in flannel. There were flannel dresses, skirts, trousers, scarfs, and of course the classic button up. The classic 90s grunge look was pairing a band T with a flannel button-up, denim shorts, and converse. Does this sound familiar? The 90s grunge look is now the cool/casual hipster look.

4. Denim

If there was one style that defined the 90s, it’s the attack of the denim. I’m guilty of wearing denim overalls, denim pencil skirts, and denim dresses. Once dubbed the working man’s textile, denim has transformed into a fashion staple. This past year, we witnessed the return of the denim overalls. To be honest, I didn’t jump on the band wagon with this trend but I love almost anything else denim. It’s just such an easy material to work with and style. I hope denim continues to remain an essential piece in one’s closet.

5. Oversized Sweaters

I admire everything about the oversized sweater look. It’s cozy, comfortable, and so easy to just throw on. I had the coolest sweaters as a kid. My favorite was my red mini-mouse sweater; I wore it several times a week. I still love wearing oversized sweaters and cardigans but in more toned down neutral tones.

OOTD: Abbot Kinney

OOTD Mondays, The Caffeine Chronicles

We spent the day in Venice, California and thought it would be cool to share it with y’all. The agenda included exploring the boutiques in Abbot Kinney, a caffeine break at Intelligentsia, and strolling along the Venice canals. Venice is a really cool city full of amazing street art and interesting people.

Abbot Kinney is full of cozy boutiques with unique products. It’s fun to just explore and do a bit of window shopping.

We’ve already been to the Intelligentsia in Pasadena and Silver Lake, so the last location off the check list was Venice. It was a beautiful day so we enjoyed sipping our lattes in the outdoor seating area.

Let’s be real…other than the artisan coffee and environment, the baristas are one of the best parts of visiting Intelligentsia .

Street Art

One of my favorite things about Venice is the incredible street art. Every corner you turn there is a mural that gives life to an otherwise boring wall. It’s an inspiring city that actively promotes the importance of art.

Men’s Style

Current Obsession/Holy Grail

Men's StyleCasual – Simple as it sounds, I love a guy in a t-shirt and well worn jeans. It’s incredible how appealing guys can look in a simple black t-shirt. Ray Bans, a leather jacket, and/or a beanie are just icing on the cake. Really, really attractive icing….

Formal – Whoever said “a well tailored suit is to women what lingerie is to men” hit the nail right on the head. A man in a suit is simply irresistible, and bonus cute points for a skinny floral tie.

Style is the first thing I notice in a guy. The way a man dresses and carries himself heavily influences his whole demeanor. For me, a good sense of style is one of the sexiest qualities in a man. Men's StyleCasual – A guy doesn’t have to be all dressed up to look good. Even dark washed jeans paired with a cool t-shirt or simple button up can be super attractive. The look I picked is a perfect example. This gentleman is dressed casually yet still put together. I love the layering with the cardigan, pea coat, and the satchel over his shoulder. I’m also a sucker for a man who can rock a stylish pair of specs.

Formal – A nicely tailored suit always makes a man look like a million bucks. However, that isn’t the only option for formal attire. I actually prefer when a guy mixes and matches materials and neutral tones (like the pictures demonstrates). The marble brown blazer works perfectly with the light blue button up and black slacks. Also, adding on a tie or bow-tie is always a good idea. Finally for shoes, brown oxfords or desert shoes are my favorite. Uh I just love men’s fashion…

Holy Grail: Fashion Edition

Current Obsession/Holy Grail

You stand in front of your open closet, clothes lying everywhere. You’ve flicked through everything in your wardrobe seven, eight, nine times and still have nothing to wear. You’re on the verge of pulling your hair out in frustration when you spot old faithful. Maybe it’s your favorite LBD that goes with everything, or that oversized tee that masks how bloated you are. Whatever it may be, every girl has those few fashion tidbits that she can always turn to, even on the worst of days. They may be ultra comfortable or maybe you feel extra trendy and stylish when you wear them, but some items you just need in your fashion collection. Here are our closet essentials.

Audrey's Fashion Holy GrailClearly I’m into neutrals. While black is my go-to, I still love to wear these items in all different colors.

1 » Comfortable Tees – I love loose, slouchy t-shirts because a) they’re super comfortable and b) they go with absolutely everything. You can dress them up or down with the right accessories, but no matter what you’re always guaranteed to be incredibly comfortable. They’re especially great for those nothing-looks-good-on-me days. My favorites are v-necks and the best part is that they look great in every color.

2 » The Perfect Pair of Skinny Jeans – Every woman knows that finding that perfect pair of jeans is a magical moment. Having a pair of jeans that makes your butt look fab is an essential part of building your wardrobe. My favorite kind are dark wash skinny jeans because they look put together enough to be worn casual or a little dressier. If you look and feel good in your jeans, it’s a lot easier to build an outfit that you feel confident in.

» Maxi Skirts – Y’all know I love me a good maxi skirt. For those hot summer days when even my favorite pair of jeans aren’t cutting it, having a good maxi skirt on hand is a life saver. I personally love dark floral maxis and other fun prints. I’m looking to get my hands on a solid black one next because really is there anything you can’t wear with such a basic piece?

4 » Cute Underwear – This is another one of those look good, feel good pieces. Even if no one is going to see your underwear, knowing you have on your best lacies just makes you feel good. Having cute underwear is a fun little confidence booster. And I don’t need to tell you that wearing an incredible bra can make you feel 100x foxier that day.

5 » A Good Jacket – Whether I’m living in San Diego or LA I’m blessed with gorgeous weather almost year-round. Even so, having a good jacket on hand is super important. For one, it keeps you warm (duh), but it can also tidy up any look. If I know that I’m just running errands and I’ll be wearing my jacket most of the time, I don’t have to fuss too much about what I have on underneath. A leather jacket really pulls things together and makes it look like you tried, even if you didn’t.

ellas fashion holy grail

1 » Striped T-Shirt – Every time I go shopping, I’m automatically drawn to anything striped…I actually think I have a problem. I could wear a striped tee everyday. They are so versatile and easy to style. Add on a chunky necklace, bold lip, or even pair it with a contrasting print. A striped tee is cool and effortless.

2 » Denim Button Up  – There was a time in my life where I only wanted to wear a denim button up all day erry day. It’s my go-to item when I have no idea what to wear because it’s casual yet put together. Like a striped t-shirt, they are SO easy to just throw on and style. I also love the 90s feel of a denim shirt.

» Dark Wash Skinny High Waisted Ankle Jeans – Wow that was a mouthful, I apologize. I have very specific qualifications when I’m shopping for jeans. They have to be a skinny dark washed cut because it’s much more flattering and versatile. It has be high waisted (sitting on the waist/belly button) because I find low/middle cut jeans uncomfortable. This might be TMI, but I don’t want to worry about showing crackage (yeah definitely TMI). Lastly, I prefer ankle cut because I’m short. Showing off some ankle elongates the legs a bit…it’s just an illusion though.

4 » Floral Print Skater Dress – I love wearing a skater dress in any floral print or color. I naturally gravitate towards them every time I’m dress shopping. They are feminine, classic, and comfortable.

5 » Neutral Cardigan – A cardigan in any neutral color is essential. I prefer wearing a beige toned cardigan rather than black or white because I find it’s easier to work with. Everyone loves a good cardigan; you can throw it over almost anything and it’s super cozy.
