Runway to Everyday

Inspired By

The looks that we see on the runway are often too outrageous or too pricey to be worn by the average person, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t serve as great inspiration. We’ve both observed certain outfits on the catwalk that dropped our jaws and got us thinking about how we could recreate them to fit our everyday lives (and budgets). We don’t necessarily want to create a piece by piece replica of the outfit but instead draw on the designer’s idea and infuse it with our own personal style.

Runway to Everyday - Audrey

This runway look is from the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2014 show. The entire collection drew on Sicily’s history with ancient Greece, one of the designers calling it “a dream of Sicily”. The flowers and flowing fabric make for an ethereal look while the chunky Grecian belt provides a contrast to the softness of the ensemble. I found this great dress on ASOS that doesn’t mirror the Dolce & Gabbana frock exactly, but has a similar elegance to it. The pastel floral print and braided straps are reminiscent of the Grecian feel in the Dolce & Gabbana collection. I would throw on a large, metallic belt like this one from Love Melrose to roughen up the look a bit.

Runway to EverydayThe designs of Hermès’ Christophe Lemaire stood out to me the most from the Fall/Winter 2014 Paris Fashion Week runway looks. The entire collection is inspired by menswear with beautifully tailored and flowing silhouettes in an autumnal color palette. This runway look achieves a perfect juxtaposition of structure and draping and could easily be converted to an everyday look. Fitted trousers and white button ups are everywhere in stores nowadays. I’ve opted for a gorgeous pair of black trousers from Zara paired with black ankle boots, a loosely fitted white top from Urban Outfitters, and a marble grey duster coat from Topshop. I know the menswear trend is not for everyone but I love how masculine attire can be beautifully translated into feminine style.

OOTD Monday: Mike Kelley Exhibition at MOCA

OOTD Mondays

This past Saturday, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles held a closing party for the Mike Kelley exhibition at the Geffen Contemporary. The exhibitions started in Amsterdam and traveled to Paris, New York, and finally Los Angeles. Though we’re not huge fans of Kelley’s work, we thought it would be fun to join this party and be a part of the lively and interesting art scene.

Photography was not allowed for most of the exhibitions but I snapped some of his work (that we were allowed to shoot) to share a glimpse of the show with you.

OOTD Mondays, The Caffeine Chronicles

We spent the day in Venice, California and thought it would be cool to share it with y’all. The agenda included exploring the boutiques in Abbot Kinney, a caffeine break at Intelligentsia, and strolling along the Venice canals. Venice is a really cool city full of amazing street art and interesting people.

Abbot Kinney is full of cozy boutiques with unique products. It’s fun to just explore and do a bit of window shopping.

We’ve already been to the Intelligentsia in Pasadena and Silver Lake, so the last location off the check list was Venice. It was a beautiful day so we enjoyed sipping our lattes in the outdoor seating area.

Let’s be real…other than the artisan coffee and environment, the baristas are one of the best parts of visiting Intelligentsia .

Street Art

One of my favorite things about Venice is the incredible street art. Every corner you turn there is a mural that gives life to an otherwise boring wall. It’s an inspiring city that actively promotes the importance of art.

OOTD Monday: Industrial District

OOTD Mondays

Before heading back to San Diego, I really wanted one last day in the heart of LA. So we headed to an adorable coffee shop hidden within the Industrial District (Caffeine Chronicle post on that here) and shot an OOTD for you guys. Enjoy!

OOTD Monday: Matching Denim + Les Misérables

OOTD Mondays

We recently went to see Les Misérables (AMAZING movie btw. Go see it!) and inadvertently matched outfits. So natch we had to shoot an OOTD and compare/contrast how we each styled this basic wardrobe staple. The great thing about denim tops is that they’re so incredibly versatile and flatter just about everyone.

Les Miserables OOTD

I kept this outfit very basic with all black beneath the denim top, minimal jewelry, then a pop of animal print on my feet. I love denim tops and I like to let them speak for themselves, but I really like this twist with the interesting shoes.

Though Audrey and I both chose to rock a denim button up we both styled it in very different ways. This shows how versatile the denim shirt can be.  I went with a band T and layered the crap out of it. Instead of denim on the bottom I chose to pair it with black leather-esque pants just to give the outfit more contrast. This is a perfect casual yet stylish outfit for an evening out with your friends to I don’t know… watch a movie or something :)

Band T: I got this Mumford and Son’s T shirt off a street vendor when I went to their concert at the Hollywood Bowl in November. It was only 5 dollars so I cut off the sleeves and  made it into a crop top. I love this shirt because it comes with an amazing memory of seeing my favorite band in concert.
